The City of Burlington is pleased to announce the winner of the “Name That Plan” Comprehensive Land Use Plan naming contest. The name “Destination Burlington,” proposed by Mr. Chad Cook’s 1st Block Civics and Economics Class at Hugh M. Cummings High School, received the most community votes and will become the moniker for upcoming City’s 20-year Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
In late November, the Burlington Planning Department visited area High Schools to teach a lesson about City Planning. Students were able to work together to fill in blank areas on city maps with what they would like to see in a future Burlington. Students were then asked to propose possible names for Burlington’s next Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
The 14 Comprehensive Plan names proposed by the participating groups of high school students were then put to a vote of the public. Of the 230 total votes cast, “Destination Burlington” received the most.
Mayor Ronnie K. Wall and Director of Planning and Economic Development, Amy Nelson will visit the winning class at 10:30AM on Tuesday, January 7th to congratulate the students. Mr. Cook will receive a formal Certificate of Appreciation, on behalf of his class, from the Burlington City Council at the regularly scheduled meeting at 7:00PM on January 7th.
The City of Burlington will soon embark on a planning process that will formulate a blueprint for the City’s development over the next twenty years. This type of planning process is used to produce a document known as a Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Over the next several months, the City will continue to reach out to the public for input regarding Burlington’s future.
