[ARCHIVED] Pet Adoption Center Participates in $100K Challenge

Be a Lifesaver! Adopt today and help us win $100K!

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals asked animal shelters throughout the country to “save more lives” for a chance at winning a grand prize of $100,000. The ASPCA’s “$100K Challenge” dares participating shelters to save the lives of 300 more pets, through adoption, rescue, or return-to-owner, during the months of August, September and October than they did during those months in the previous year.

You helped us qualify to participate in the Challenge by voting for us online. The Pet Adoption Center was one of the 50 most vote-receiving shelters in the country and was granted the opportunity to compete for the grand prize! Now the pressure is on and the Pet Adoption Center must save the lives of at least 627 pets from August 1st to October 31st.

How does the Pet Adoption Center plan to do it? With the help of the community! Throughout the three-month Challenge period, the Adoption Center will participate in multiple adoption fairs, host various adoption events, and offer promotional adoption fee reductions in order to encourage potential pet parents to adopt during the Challenge. Return-to-owner is another important component with which the community can help. Pet owners are encouraged to keep current identification on their pets at all times. If a pet is missing, call and visit the Burlington Animal Shelter frequently! Every day is not too often! Pet owners can call 336-578-0343 or come to 215 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River.

Join the Pet Adoption Center as it kicks-off its run for the ASPCA $100K Challenge at the Saving Lives Adoption Fair on Saturday, August 6th from 10am-5pm at the Burlington Pet Adoption Center located at 221 Stone Quarry Road in Haw River. Help the Adoption Center reach its goal of emptying the shelter! WMAG 99.5 will be broadcasting live from the Adoption Center from 12pm-2pm and a host of vendors offering information about pet supplies, services, grooming, and obedience training will be on hand all day long. Chick-Fil-A and TCBY will have their treats available for purchase. Bring your whole family to the event and bring home your new best friend. Take advantage of the half-priced adoption fees that will be offered during the event!

Regular adoptions fees are $80.00 for dogs and $60.00 for cats, made payable by cash or check. These fees include spay/neuter surgery, heartworm test for dogs older than six months, initial Pyrantel de-worming treatments, one-year rabies vaccination, Bordetella and DHLPP vaccination for dogs or FVRCP vaccinations for cats. Individuals must be 21 years or older in order to adopt. Pets are typically available for adoption at the Pet Adoption Center on Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm and on Saturdays from 10am-4pm, but be on the lookout for more special adoption events during the Challenge.

The Pet Adoption Center plans to keep the public updated on upcoming Challenge events and its progress throughout the Challenge. The community can learn about upcoming events at and follow the Challenge on Facebook by “liking” the Lifesaver Challenge at .
