In an effort to help keep the city clean, the Burlington City Council has waived bulk collection fees from February 14th through April 1st.
Since this “Spring into Cleaning” promotion began, three and a half weeks ago, 429 tons of bulk waste has been collected by the City of Burlington Sanitation Division. 327 tons of the waste collected consisted of bulk yard waste and 102 tons of the waste was bulk ‘junk’ items. The amount of bulk waste collected at no charge during the past three and a half weeks equals 17% of the total amount of bulk waste collected throughout the city last year. The City’s bulk waste trucks have already made 2,414 stops since the promotion began on February 14th.
Normal bulk collection fees are $6.75 per “bite” of a bulk truck if more than one “bite” is necessary. During the “Spring into Cleaning” promotion, these fees have been waived. Customers have saved $15,672 in bulk collection fees since February 14th. This amount represents 21% of the total fees charged for bulk waste collection during the last fiscal year.
Bulk items include tree trimmings (shorter than six feet), limbs (under six inches in diameter), large yard waste volumes, large household items, mattresses, sofas, large furniture items, rolled carpet, large appliances, white goods and large metals. Items that cannot be collected include motor oil, anti-freeze, batteries, scrap tires, construction debris, wood pallets, electronics, contractor waste, or any recyclables.
This promotion applies to residential units that currently receive bulk collection services. The Sanitation Division asks that residents simply place bulk items out one day prior to their usual trash pick-up day.
Yard waste may be bagged, neatly stacked or containerized. Bagged waste may only be placed in clear bags; no other type of bag will be accepted. Containers may not exceed 32 gallons in capacity or 50 pounds in weight.
The “Spring into Cleaning” free bulk waste collections will continue until April 1st.The City encourages citizens to take advantage of this promotion and help to keep Burlington clean!
