New beginnings were celebrated at the December 1, 2009 Burlington City Council meeting with the swearing in of two, new Council members and the re-swearing of current Mayor Ronnie Wall. Friends and family members gathered with the electees to celebrate and join in the official ceremony.
Judge Tom Lambeth, Jr. presided over the event. All three gentlemen raised their right hand and affirmed their duties for public office.
The election marks the second term for Ronnie K. Wall as mayor. Additionally, former Mayor Stephen Ross rejoined as a Councilman after leaving office in 2007. Newcomer Celo Faucette assumed his first term as a Councilman.
Preceding the event, the former Council recognized Larry Sharpe for his service to the City. Sharpe was appointed to fill the remainder of Councilman Don Starling's position after he passed away earlier this year.
"I've been in public service now for 21 years... it's been an honor to serve the citizens of Burlington and Alamance County," said Sharpe. "I can tell you from being on the inside... the City is a well run operation that citizens can be proud of."
Sharpe went on to speak directly about his experience working with the late Councilman "Coach" David Maynard. "One of the reasons I chose to fill this position was the privilege of being able to serve with such a wonderful public servant."
