Steve Shoaf, Utilities Director reported to the City Council Monday night that the Jordan Lake Nutrient Management Study prepared by the North Carolina Department of Economic and Natural Resources could cost the City of Burlington up to 30 million dollars for upgrades to wastewater treatment facilities beginning in 2006 or 2007. The study, a part of a statewide program would require the City to meet more stringent limits for wastewater discharge into the Haw River. City Council members voiced concern over these unfunded mandates and also questioned whether these new requirements would actually improve water quality. City Council instructed City staff to meet with State officials to discuss other alternatives and time frames for compliance with this program.
