BURLINGTON FIRE DEPARTMENT TO CONDUCT ANNUAL TESTING AND MAINTENANCE OF CITY FIRE HYDRANTS
The Burlington Fire Department will conduct annual testing and maintenance of all City fire hydrants during the months of March through October. Testing procedures will include flowing water through the hydrants to flush out debris, gauging the water flow available at each hydrant, and lubricating hydrant caps for easy access during emergencies. Maintenance tasks may include painting the hydrants and marking them with identification numbers.
Annual testing and maintenance of fire hydrants is necessary to ensure that the Fire Department has dependable water supply with which to extinguish fires. It is also required in order to maintain an excellent fire insurance rating for the City.
During the testing months, residents are encouraged to check the water in their homes before using it for drinking or clothes washing. Flushing may result in localized cloudiness and discoloration of the water. This condition is temporary and the result of the scouring action on the water lines caused during the process. Residents should not wash clothes in water that is discolored. This may result in staining. You can quickly clear up the discolored water in your home or business by flushing water through your plumbing. If you have any questions about this notice, please contact the Burlington Fire Department at (336) 229-3564 or (336) 516-6538.
