[ARCHIVED] Public Information Meeting Results in Grassroots Committee

The City of Burlington held a public information meeting to educate the community on Stormwater, Phase II Stormwater Rules and Regulations and the proposed Jordan Lake rules on Wednesday, August 9, 2006. The meeting was held at the John Robert Kernodle Senior Center. There were approximately 35 concerned citizens in attendance. City staff presented an overview of how these rules could impact our community. Information about the proposed Jordan Lake rules, that could result in changes to point source treatment facilities and additional stormwater requirements to meet mandated nitrogen and phosphorus reductions in the Jordan Lake basin were also presented. Steve Shoaf, Director of Utilities stated, "The discussion at the meeting was encouraging. We all support protection of the environment, but it is important that our citizens understand the impacts of the proposed rules." The audience asked many good questions, but many of the answers are yet to be determined. The City, as well as other municipalities that are part of the Jordan Lake are subject to mandates from the state. Harold Hill of Glen Raven, Inc. encouraged others to join him in forming a committee to spread the word and educate others. About seven folks signed up to join him on the grass roots committee. Harold Owen, City Manager stated, “basically these rules will result in the limitation of the growth of our tax base.”
