The City of Burlington, NC is searching for an Economic Development Director to lead a new economic development department. The Economic Development Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that support and increase economic growth; acts as a liaison to economic development agency partners (chamber, downtown, airport, others); understands and advocates for the private sector; supports formation and implementation of policies; markets the City; and promotes redevelopment of underutilized properties.

Burlington, population 52,472, is located on I-40 in the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina. Many around the state have said that Burlington is on the cusp of taking off economically. The infrastructure and human capital is in place for tremendous success and the community pride and civic engagement is extraordinary. The City is looking for a savvy, motivated professional to guide and lead the community’s return to economic greatness.

Burlington is home to sports venues, arts and cultural programs, shopping, dining, outdoor recreation, and other entertainment. Downtown is undergoing revitalization and includes a historic district. Major employers include Laboratory Corporation of America, Alamance Regional Medical Center, Kayser-Roth Corporation, Kernodle Clinic, Carolina Biological Supply, Glen Raven, Elon University, and Carolina Hosiery Mills, Inc. Responsibilities include implementation of a strategic economic development plan; achieving economic growth objectives of the city; serving as the initial point of contact for commercial businesses; providing information to recruit new businesses and support the growth and expansion of existing businesses; developing and maintaining data, statistics and publications which portray the economic potential of the city; and providing support to city council, city manager, chamber of commerce ,and other groups working to attract new industry and supporting existing business expansion. The Director reports to the City Manager and is evaluated through reports, consultations, and results.

To be considered, candidates must have five or more years’ experience in economic development, redevelopment, business, chamber, marketing, finance, or a related field; Bachelor’s degree; excellent written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills; and proficiency in general business technologies and analytical tools. Master’s Degree and Certified Economic Developer credential preferred. Job description available on the city’s website and upon request. Salary range $80,000 - $110,000.
