Departments throughout the City of Burlington are preparing to respond to the inclement weather that will begin in the early hours of Friday, January 22nd.
The Street division has completed brining thoroughfares, collector streets, downtown, and public parking lots. Street division employees will report to work again at 2:00 a.m. on Friday the 22nd. They will be deployed with salt trucks as soon as accumulation of frozen precipitation begins. The Street division will be salting and then plowing/scraping through Saturday evening. They are equipped with 17 plows, 8 salt spreaders, and 2 motor graders. They have access to 600 tons of salt on-site.
Priority in salting and plowing roadways is given first to thoroughfares with high traffic counts and then to collector streets with high traffic volume, these streets generally allow one to drive from a residential street to a main thoroughfare.
The Cemetery and Grounds division is responsible for snow removal in the downtown area in crosswalks and on sidewalks bordering City properties. They are equipped with one ton of ice melt, 24 snow shovels, 3 snow throwers and tractor with a scrape blade. They are fully staffed with 14 employees and plan to begin snow removal operations at first light, around 7:00 a.m. on Friday the 22nd.
The Fire Department has up-staffed to have units in reserve and the Police Department has prepared patrol vehicles and will be deploying their small fleet of four-wheel drive vehicles.
