Burlington Junior Police Academy Gives Back
On the morning of July 30, at-risk youth answered their community’s call for help. Thirty-nine cadets from the Burlington Junior Police Academy delivered over 1,400 food items to Loaves & Fishes, a food ministry for Alamance County. While many of these young people face their own adversities on a daily basis, the cadets stepped-up to the challenge helping to feed hungry families in their community.

Loaves & Fishes is a food ministry that provides groceries to food insecure
families in Alamance and surrounding counties. As the economic downturn continues to affect communities throughout the state, food pantries continue to feel the squeeze with more clients and fewer donations. This year, the Academy was able to top last year’s
donation total and hopes are high to show an even larger improvement next year.
“We’re happy the program can lend a helping hand to our community,” said Cpl. Chad Laws, Junior Police Program Coordinator. “By helping these cadets essentially give back to their own communities… we hope to instill a sense of pride that carries them forward despite the difficult situations they may face.”
The Burlington Junior Police Academy is an annual program designed to provide
at-risk youth social skills intended to make them more productive students and members of society. The program is funded through both monetary and in-kind donations from the community.

PAWS Presents Council with Animal Services Funding (Video)
At the July 15, Burlington City Council meeting Vicky Hunt, Chairman of the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS), reimbursed the city over $32,000 on a PAWS commitment to support a more humane form of euthanasia for Burlington Animal Services and the Pet Adoption Center.

Emphasizing that this is not the overall solution, Ms. Hunt recognized that additional efforts in the form of increasing spay/neuter options would be necessary to decrease intake numbers at the shelter. In response to recommendations from a city initiated task force, PAWS has committed and additional $100,000 towards spay/neuter efforts.
