The Burlington Police Department offers a variety of special units for officers to work within during their career. Having several different units allows officers to gain diversified experiences in their career. The special units offer the employee the opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience in areas other than uniformed patrol. This also benefits the citizens of Burlington because their needs are better addressed by officers that are specially trained in dealing with specific needs. These units allow the employee(s) to work within other divisions of the police department, to become familiar with how those divisions function, and to take advantage of the training associated with that special unit. Some of the special units require extensive initial training that can last several weeks, but all of the special units require that the employee receive continual training in their field.
We also have specialized divisions for civilian staff; these units do not require sworn personnel. Civilian staff can also work within units that are typically staffed by officers. However, most of our civilian staff do receive specialized and ongoing training depending upon which the unit in which they work. For example, our Crime Scene Investigators have received specialized training in order to properly analyze crime scenes.
