Maynard Aquatic Center

We have some disappointing news to report regarding the ongoing repairs to the Maynard Aquatic Center structure. While all of the stainless steel components that have arrived have been installed, we are still awaiting the arrival of a final set of cables before the final replacements can be completed.

A part necessary to complete the fabrication of these cables has been backordered. Our supplier tells us this could take several more weeks before the completed cables arrive in Burlington. Once they arrive, we are prepared to quickly install the cables, clean the decks of any remaining debris from the repairs, uncover, clean, and regulate the pool (which has been sealed to protect it from the project surrounding it) and reopen the MAC to the public. However, it appears that we may not be able to reopen the MAC in April, but rather anticipate a May opening. We will provide an anticipated opening date as soon as we have a shipping date identified for the remaining cables.

We sincerely apologize and would like to assure our patrons that City staff have been working diligently to get the MAC reopened as soon as possible. There is no doubt that replacing the stainless steel structural components was necessary, but sourcing these components has been problematic as they are uncommon and therefore not readily available.

The repair project is continuing and coming to a close.  Crews are waiting on the arrival of one remaining part to arrive and will be able to complete the project.  Staff are still preparing for an April opening date.  As the specific date becomes available it will be shared so that patrons can plan accordingly.  We are excited to be nearing the end of this long process and can't wait to hear the splashing of swimmers in our pool again.

MAC Update: All of the stainless steel components to repair the MAC as prescribed by structural engineers have been identified and ordered. A contractor has been secured to replace these components as they arrive. Work is underway now, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, should be completed in April.

 2/1/2019 -
The Maynard Aquatics Center Update:
The necessary replacement parts (many of them custom) have been identified and ordered.  City staff is now awaiting the parts’ arrival.  These parts will be installed as they arrive. This work will repair the deficiencies identified in the structural engineers report after the shackle failure that occurred in December 2018. Barring any unforeseen circumstances the Maynard Aquatics Center is working towards a April opening. The Alamance County YMCA will continue to accommodate MAC pass holders at its pool facility.

1/2019 - The City of Burlington has received the report from the structural engineer’s examination of the MAC  and are currently in the process of purchasing the required hardware to make necessary repairs to the structure. The pieces are specially manufactured due to the environment of the pool. We are working with the supplier now to get delivery dates, which will drive the installation time-frame.

12/2018- The MAC has closed for an evaluation after staff discovered a broken turnbuckle on the cross bracing tension cable of the covered pool structure. A structural engineering firm visited the site and performed an evaluation and the City is currently awaiting the subsequent report from that inspection. After receiving the report, the City will act to correct any safety issues that may be identified. The MAC will remain closed until the report is received and any necessary corrective action is taken. unfortunately, we do not currently have an estimated timeline for the length of the facility’s closure.

The City is grateful for our community partners that have come together during this unexpected closure to provide aquatic facility use to MAC Patrons. The Alamance County YMCA is currently accommodating MAC pass holders at its pool facility at no additional charge. They are also offering pool access to non-YMCA members for $3.00 during specified times (details linked below).

B-Town Aquatics hosts the Alamance Swim & Dive Association Swim Meet yearly in July as well as local high school swim team meets between November and February.

The David L. Maynard, Sr. Aquatic Center, affectionately known as the MAC, is a 386,000 gallon year-round aquatic-recreation facility with a zero-depth entry, hand railed ramp, six 25-yard training lanes, 2 lined "phantom" lanes, a toddler section with the Frog Slide, and a diving well.

The pool is covered with a semi-permanent structure. From June through Labor Day weekend, the walls are taken down, but the ceiling stays up providing sun-safe fun in the water. The walls are put up through the winter months and the deck area is heated. The water is heated year-round to a range of 82 - 84 deg Fahrenheit. Along with the warm water and usage-adaptability, there is also plenty of parking and ample deck space for party gatherings. The MAC has something to offer everyone.

The MAC is open year-round. Patrons are asked to leave the pool deck 15 minutes prior to closing. Please note the Special hours on the right that denotes days the facility will be closed or close early.
